Ham Radio – The Heroes of the Storm

Seaside Tsunami Amateur Radio Society Radio # WA7VE The next 2-day ‘Free Ham Radio Class’ is scheduled for Friday 2/1/08 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm and Sat. 2/2/08 from 9:00am to 4:00pm at Clatsop Community College in Seaside. CERT: Community Emergency Response Team
The first class will graduate this month. Seaside CERT teams will receive additional Tsunami PREP training and will focus on community outreach and education. The next Seaside CERT training starts Spring 2008. Contact person: Alice Wood (503) 338-0582 What is CERT? CERT is a training program that prepares you to help yourself, your family, and your neighbors in the event of a disaster. During an incident, emergency service personnel may not be able to reach everyone right away. By getting trained in CERT, you will have skills to help emergency responders save lives and protect property. The Benefits of CERT training.

NOAA Weather Radios - INFO YOU NEED TO KNOW:
NOAA weather radios can be an invaluable emergency preparedness tool. However, it is not uncommon to experience some confusion regarding WHEN and WHY the audio alert goes on. Several people commented that their “NOAA Radio didn’t work during the storm.” Below you will find an excerpt of a memo from a NOAA manager, which should clarify the situation.
“...We only tone alert the radios for 5 events per the state Emergency Alert System (EAS) plan. These are Tsunami, Tornado, Flash Flood, Severe Thunderstorm and Flood Warnings (for major flood category).... The Tone alerts are typically for life-threatening events that will occur in the next few hours! For more information on EAS go to www.nws.noaa.gov/om/NWS_EAS.shtml. .... Emergency Check Lists -
YOU must be prepared! Preparing yourself, your family and your business helps not only YOU, but it helps lighten the load on emergency services, shelters, food banks, etc. There are many excellent preparedness tools. For samples of various emergency check lists and tips, visit websites provided by state, county and federal agencies. Excellent information is also available from the Red Cross. http://www.redcross.com/ We like the one below, developed by CERT member Roy Hackett. The most important thing is – JUST DO IT!!
